Lisbon Exhibit 2009
Several of the artists we represent, and some we work with on a project basis, are participating in an exhibit at 9Arte gallery in Lisbon Portugal. The exhibit opening is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 29 and the exhibit will run through October 30.
This will be the first of several international exhibits in which American painters will be featured.
The exhibit displays the work of American artists with diverse experiences, backgrounds, mediums, and techniques. The works, seemingly and essentially different in their appearance, have one common element which is their inherent American inspiration. Whether painting abstract landscapes, realistic portraits, or totally abstract paintings, there is yet another common element tying these works: seemingly abstract images are based on real and concrete experiences and seemingly realistic paintings are really representations of often abstract concepts.
There is no exclusively abstract or exclusively realistic work represented in this exhibit. To this extent, these works are current representations of the American tradition that evolved from such different traditions as American Realism and Abstract Expressionism. They are American paintings, and American photographs! T. S. Elliot one said: “[My poetry] wouldn’t be what it is if I’d been born in England, and it wouldn’t be what it is if I’d stayed in America. It’s a combination of things. But in its sources, in its emotional springs, it comes from America.” I borrow his sentiment to introduce to you the works of these inherently American artists whose experiences may be limited to America or affected by travel or residence in other parts of the world, but are intrinsically American in feeling and tradition.
